Yes. I am aware that the title of this blog post is a line that was used by someone who went on a killing spree at an Elementary school, Shooting 9 children and killing 2 adults. But, I really just dont like Mondays! Monday is the day you come back and go “Oh crap look at all this stuff that has to get done.” Monday you refresh yourself with the past week, or perhaps fix what you broke.
Ive noticed something about night. Now, normally, I tend to be most productive on Friday and Saturday night, from around eight at night until two the next morning. I think up my best ideas, and I code most effectively during those hours. And it isnt like I just work better – I work alot better. I work more error-free. And I multitask more efficiently. It seems to me like everything I do is more efficient and productive at night – Heck, this blog post is being written at quarter past ten.
For example, last night, I managed to crank out a good chunk of the backend to my latest Facebook app. Today, I wake up around 11 and notice how much clearer and more organized my late at night code is compared to my less than stunning daytime code. To the right is an example of my night and day code – I think you can tell the difference. And that brings me back to my multitask skills. I have found that during a normal day, I can usually hold 3-4 simultaneous IM conversations and do one other background task. However, at night, I tend to be able to talk to people, code, listen to music, and browse facebook almost all at the same time. I get more accomplished. And on top of that, I just seem to make less mistakes. Things get done right the first time, I come up with better ideas, and I get more done. After some quick Googling I found a few tech blogs of people writing about the same thing – So my question is… This night effectiveness. Is it a geek thing that we work better at night, or does anyone else notice this as well? Comments welcome!
